Dirty Sons of Pitches (Director's Cut)

The "Dirty Sons of Pitches" are looking at the four films from Alex Garland, notable genre screenwriter who began his directing career with 2015's Oscar-winning "Ex Machine," and followed it up with disorienting and challenging movies like "Anihilation" and "Men," both of which didn't quite work for the gents. They also use the occasion as an excuse to talk about Garland's latest directing effort, A24's "Civil War," supposedly following journalists treading through the terror of the United States at war with itself.

The "Dirty Sons of Pitches" are looking at the films of the man who set the bar for modern fantasy epics, Peter Jackson. Ben and Nate look at his early splatterhouse horror, the best and worst films of his prolific career, how underappreciated 1996's "The Frighteners" is, the impact and risk of the original "Lord of the Rings" trilogy and the excess of the "Hobbit" films, and where the guys might like to see Jackson go next. They also chat about the new "Kong: Skull Island" and compare it to Jackson's epic-sized Kong.

It's been over a year since the "Dirty Sons of Pitches" unveiled a new edition of their Director's Cut podcast subset, and so with the release of "Independence Day 2," the guys are looking at the career of the master of disaster himself, Roland Emmerich. Along with a review of "ID4-2"(?) the guys chat their favorite and least favorite Emmerich movies, why he's so good at disaster movies, ways 1998's "Godzilla" might be forgivable, the lasting power of "Stargate," and what they'd like to see him do next.

The latest retrospective on the Mexican director who has redfined our thoughts on big-screen creepy crawlies. Guillermo del Toro is a man who likes things squishy and deals with plenty of horror and fantasy imagery. And so the "Dirty Sons of Pitches" discuss the man's career, their favorite and least favorite films of his, what they'd like to see him do next, as well as his involvement in the "Hobbit" trilogy.

This week, in lieu of a new episode, Nate and Ben talk about one of the most critically acclaimed directors of all time, Stan The Man Kubrick. Was he the genius he's crackec up to be, or just an overrated hack? Ben uses the opportunity to release some long pent up rage against The Shining, while Nate reserves his outrage for the Kubrick film that might have been: A.I. In our first posthumous DC, we wrap up by discussing what we would have liked to see if Kubrick could make one last movie.

The "Dirty Sons of Pitches" hearts may go on but they'll never be the same thanks to reigning box-office King of the World, James Cameron, the subject of the latest podcast subseries, Director's Cut. The gang discusses Cameron's history with action films, his impact on the Hollywood blockbuster, his best and worst films, and what they would like to see him work on next, you know, instead of a thousand "Avatar" sequels for the next 20 years. So don't get your ponytail in a bunch and start listening.

The "Dirty Sons of Pitches" are making due for a grave omission in their podcast sub-series looking at the works of a single director. Arguably the most popular director of his generation, Steven Spielberg's films are discussed as a whole, his penchant for sentimentality, his bold imaginations, and the guys favorite and least favorite films. They discuss changes over his career, including E.T.'s walky talky controversy, resonating themes, and where Spielberg stands today.

The "Dirty Sons of Pitches" are back with another in depth analysis of a director, this time "Man of Steel" and "300" director Zack Snyder. The guys take turns sharing their favorite and least favorite Snyder movies, talk about the visual hallmarks of Snyder's style, question his connection to material as well as his use of onscreen violence, and then kick around ideas they'd like to see Snyder tackle next. Note: this was recorded before the news of a "Batman vs. Superman" sequel to "Man of Steel," though some of us already predicted something similar.

The gang talks about comedy legend Mel Brooks, whom they hold personal fondness over. They chat about the best and worst Brooks flms, his seeming retirement from cinema, concentration into musical theater, and what exactly they'd like to see him do next. Hint: It's not a secret to Dracula: Dead and Loving It. They also tlak about the challenges of adapting his own work for the stage, whether Blazing Saddles could still exist in its original form for today's audiences, and why The Artist ripped him off.

The guys team up with Drew to discuss the up-and-mostly-down career of M. Night Shyamalan. They try and dissect exactly what propelled Shyamalan into his downward slide and how the man can reignite his career. Plus we even have defendors of Lady in the Water. And in grand Shyamalan tradition, stick around for the twist (there is no twist -- or is there?).

While Eric is on vacation, Nate and Ben take the absence to discuss the works of "Donnie Darko" director Richard Kelly in the second edition of "Director's Cut." Both guys talk about why they enjoy Kelly's first film and their less than enthusiastic feelings for Kelly's follow-up films, like "Southland Tales" and "The Box." They disucss where Kelly has gone wrong and debate whether or not they'll see another stellar film from the likes of Kelly. In honor of "The Box," the guys also pitch a movie based on an old "Twilight Zone" episode.

The "Dirty Sons of Pitches" are stretching out and rolling out a new series of podcasts focused on examining the career of a film director. For the inaugural podcast, the guys are taking a look at the works of Kevin Smith, the man who inspired the very formation of this podcast. They talk about their favorite Smith films, defend "Jersey Girl," debate the merits of "Cop Out," and even pitch some Kevin Smith-like films dealing with singular locations. Come celebrate Silent Bob and the man who increased all of our vocabularies (and gave us a new definition of "snowball").
